New Guinea / Port Moresby
Port
Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea is a thriving cosmopolitan
city set in the tropics with a population of some 300,000 people.
People from all of the nineteen provinces work and live together
along with a large expatriate population from many countries.
Port
Moresby is a hub when you travel in and out of the country. Depending
on your itinerary, you will stay a night or two in town before you
catch your onward connections.
There are a number of escorted day and half day tours, which include
some of the highlights: Hanuabada Village an interesting stilt village
to see, shopping for local art artifact shops or visit Varirata,
the national park for bird watching just out of Port Moresby.
Koki
Markets - These colourful and busy markets are where many Papuan
villagers meet to sell their vegetables and fruit along with fresh
sea food. There are a number of small and larger markets scattered
throughout Port Moresby and all are used as social gathering places
(Koki and Gordens Markets for example).
You will also see betel nut for sale. The small green nuts are purchased
along with mustard sticks and lime. This mild narcotic from the
areca palm is chewed by many Papua New Guinean's and the use of
it has often been compared to our having a social cup of tea.
The
National Museum has one of the finest collections of "Primitive
Art" in the world. The main exhibit contains towering house
poles from Sepik "Haus Tambarans". Most of the larger
carvings come from Sepik River areas. There are also pieces from
other parts of the country; Malagan masks from New Ireland. A walk
through the museum will expose you to nearly all the handicrafts
that are wrought in Papua New Guinea, from string bags or "bilums"
to the large sailing craft that are still used by the people of
the Trobriand islands. There is also an excellent natural history
collection that should not be missed.
The
National Parliament building is constructed in the style of a Sepik
River Haus Tambaran or Spirit House - the traditional centre of
decision making at a village level. This building represents the
democratic foundation of Papua New Guinea. The building, opened
in 1984 is symbolic of a rapidly developing and changing Nation.
Artists and craftsmen from village throughout Papua New Guinea were
brought together to work on the building
The
botanical gardens are worth a visit as they have a fantastic selection
of PNGs native orchids. They also have aviaries with Birds of Paradise,
Cassowaries and the large hornbills on display.
