Destinations / Papua New Guinea / Highlands

Madang Resort Ambua Lodge Bird of Paradise Hotel Haus Poroman Highlander Hotel The majority of PNG's population is living in the Highlands. There are about 1.5 million people living here!

Goroka and Mount Hagen are the biggest cities here and are the staring points for most tours. The Highland people probably have the most colourful traditional costumes and they proudly display them each year during traditional "Sing Sing's". Those are gatherings of many highland tribes, where tourists are welcome as well.

Highlander with traditional wig The nature and wild life are another draw card for the Highlands. Especially Birdwatchers and butterfly lovers will be amazed at the variety and beauty of the different species found.

Location

The PNG highlands were the last white spots on world maps well until WWII.

The rugged mountain terrain is secluded from the coastal areas by dense rainforest ridges that are up to 12,000 feet high! Mt Hagen lies at about 8,000 feet, Tari a little higher.

Tours

Like with all other activities in PNG, you will need local guides to bridge the culture gap and to allow for a safe and enjoyable experience. There are a number of experienced companies and guides which we use to put together your preferred itineraries.
