Products / Accommodation / Micronesia / Kosrae Village

The most remote dive resort in Micronesia

The dive resort and dive centre are located on Kosrae Island. Combine the relaxation and natural beauty of the rainforest with the sea life on our stunning, pristine Micronesian coral reefs. If you are after peace, quiet and natural beauty it is worth the extra effort to travel to this remote location.
How about surfing, bird watching, rain forest hiking, exploring ruins, fishing and kayaking are other activities to go for.

However, there is something you should be aware of. Missionaries have a huge influence here and unfortunately there are a lot of restrictions for visitors. For example, there are no activities at all allowed on Sundays. You cannot even go snorkeling. Modesty to exposed skin is also a problematic issue and on the dive boat you will be told when it is appropriate to change into your wetsuit, just to not offend any locals.

Visitor numbers are hence very low on Kosrae. If you prefer not to be restricted in your activities and movements, it is better to chose any other destination in Micronesia, which are more uncomplicated. If you don't mind a day off in your vacation and are looking for solitude, this might just be your place.

Dive Sites

Kosrae has a stunning fringing reef. Because of this spectacular reef, they often say that there is one dive site, 43 miles (70 kilometres) around. The abundance of marine life and particularly the pristine hard corals make this place special. Many of the best dive sites have mild currents and are good for novice divers. This coral reef is unique in that novice divers can enjoy an easy diving experience too.

Features

The resort itself is built using traditional village methods hundreds of years old. The result is an a beautiful architecture ancient in its planning, yet comfortable in it's practicality.

Traditionally, the construction of a "Kosraen lohm" or house begins by burying four huge corner posts six feet or more in the ground. These posts give the house its strength. As additional framing is added the entire structure is held together by strong coconut fibre twine woven in intricate knots around the timbers. The floor is raised above the ground to allow the easy flow of cooling tropical breezes. The peak of the steeply pitched thatch roof is 20 feet off the ground, easily shedding rain and encouraging cooling air currents.

Accommodation

The traditional Micronesian style bungalows are situated under the shade of mangrove, pandanus and coconut trees at the ocean's edge and interconnected by paths of naturally hard packed sand. Strategically placed torches provide night lighting along the paths.
Although the look is traditional and construction interesting, modern amenities are not missing. The bungalows have queen size beds (draped in mosquito netting), ceiling fans, electricity, hot and cold running water, a large table, chairs, in-room refrigerator and coffee making facilities.

Dive Shop

Two dive boats are available, each takes a maximum of six divers. They have two large compressors in the dive shop. Kosrae Village offers Nitrox. Certified divers can try a Nitrox experience, while certified Nitrox Divers have the option of using Nitrox an additional charge.

Activities

Hike through the dense rainforests that cover the slopes of Kosrae's mountains, explore the sea coast and mangrove swamps in a kayak, visit ancient Micronesian or World War II ruins, take your binoculars and go bird watching or snorkel or surf.
