The Resort
Papageno is a small family run resort located right on the beachfront with easy access to all the dives sites of Astrolabe Reef. The resort is set amidst lush tropical vegetation where the sound of the waves and the sweet scent of the jungle gardens are never far away. The awesome dive sites of Astrolobe Reef are aren't far away either - just a short, comfortable boat ride away ! With ensuite bures and a 24 hour electricity supply, Papageno is the best address for visitors who want to experience Kadavu in the highest level of comfort.

The Great Astrolabe Reef is the world's fourth largest barrier reef and is Fiji's largest living organism. It extends along the entire southern side of Kadavu and stretches over 120km. It is rated as one of the world's premier diving locations offering a great diversity in coral structures and marine life.
The reef was named after the ship "The Astrolabe" owned by French explorer Dumont d'Urville collided with this reef system in 1927.

Divers can choose from over 42 dive sites around Kadavu Island under the guidance of certified Padi Dive Instructors and Dive Masters.

Accommodation
Papageno offers accommodation in five moderately priced Garden Rooms and five luxury-style Ocean Bures. All accommodations have ensuite 3-way bathrooms, ceiling fans & a 24 hour electricity supply.

Ocean Bure - private, grass roofed cabins built directly in front of the beach and surrounded by exotic landscaped gardens.

Garden Room - Each room exits on to a shared deck and is surrounded on three sides with jungle orchards of mango and breadfruit.

Meals
The local produce available right on the resort's doorstep offers guests a tempting range of delicious cuisine to suit all tastes. For seafood lovers, fresh lobster & sashimi tuna are an option any day of the week along with the "catches of the day". Organic vegetables are grown in the resort's gardens along with chicken and pork raised in their own pens. There's also an abundance of tropical fruit to enjoy all through the day!

Papageno operates a fully accredited PADI diving facility with qualified Dive Instructors and Dive Masters always on hand. Boat trips to the best dive sites of Astrolabe reef operate daily. The dive shop is well equipped with a range of high quality rental gear available. If you have never dived before you can try a resort dive with one of the instructors or learn to dive on a PADI Open Water Course. Lots of sheltered, shallow dive sites offer a great training ground for novice divers!

Snorkeling
Papageno is surrounded by fringing reefs covered in beautiful soft and hard coral formations that are teeming with marine life. There is a "house-reef" easily accessible from the beach, and many secluded island coves are just a short boat ride away from the resort. It's also possible to join slightly longer boat rides to more remote areas of Astrolabe Reef where manta rays and other large marine animals are known to congregate.

Other Activities
On land there are plenty of sights to keep even the most discerning "eco-tourist" busy for a long time! With 350 acres to explore there are opportunities to hike deep into the Fijian jungle, swim beneath romantic waterfalls and even pick up a fresh mango or two on your way home! Deep sea fishing for yellow-fin tuna and "tag fishing" is also available.

Local Culture
At the heart of Papageno's magic are the local staff, all of whom live in nearby villages that still exist mainly outside of the Western cash economy - and very happily so!
A visit to the local village of Naivakarauniniu is a must - meet the chief & tour their plantations and trails. The nearby local school (supported by Papageno) is also open to visitors, and every Sunday brings the opportunity to experience the joyful sounds of the Fijian gospels at the local church!

Getting to/from Papageno
International flights to Fiji arrive at Nadi on Fiji's main island of Viti Levu. From Nadi, daily domestic flights depart to Kadavu's airport in the small town of Vunisea. There are also flights between Suva and Kadavu.

From Vunisea it takes 5 minutes by road and then approx 30 minutes by boat to reach the resort. Your journey ends when you glide into Malawai Bay and see your host waiting for you on the white sand beach!
